Palin-Biden vice presidential debate draws in 73 million

WASHINGTON — More than 73 million people watched the vice-presidential debate between Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Joe Biden on Thursday night, making it the most watched vice-presidential debate in U.S. history and very likely the second-most-watched political debate of any kind.
It ranks behind only the Oct. 28, 1980, debate between President Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan, which logged nearly 81 million viewers.
Numbers on par with TV audience for a Super Bowl

Nielsen Media Research said Friday that 70 million people watched the 90-minute debate across ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox broadcast network, Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNBC, Telemundo, Telefutura and BBC America. PBS projects another 3.5 million watched the debate, moderated by its own Gwen Ifill, on public broadcasting stations.
Before the Biden-Palin match, the most watched vice-presidential debate was the only other one to feature a female candidate. George H.W. Bush and Geraldine Ferraro drew 56.7 million viewers on Oct. 11, 1984, Nielsen said.

Sarah Palin to appear on trading cards

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin will be added to Topps’ repertoire of trading cards next week as part of its series featuring the main political players on the 2008 campaign trail.

One card will show Palin taking the oath of office as Alaska’s governor in a black suit — much like the 12 collector cards issued earlier showing Barack Obama, John McCain, Joe Biden and others.

But Palin will also be featured on a second, limited-edition card as an Alaskan beauty pageant contestant in the 1980s.

“With all the talk about her being a beauty queen, we thought it would just be fun to do a second card,” Clay Luraschi, director of product development for New York-based Topps Company Inc., said in a telephone interview Friday.

The Palin cards will be distributed in packets of Topps baseball cards starting next week…

(CNN) — Now that Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain have their first presidential debate out of the way, the focus turns to their running mates.

Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin will face off Thursday at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

There’s a lot of anticipation surrounding the VP debate because Palin has remained largely on script in her first month on the campaign trail.

Although Biden has a reputation for impetuous and brutally honest remarks, he’s also a long-time senator with decades of experience in the public eye.

As chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, the 65-year-old Delaware senator is well versed on foreign policy.

Biden has done nearly 100 interviews since being picked as Obama’s VP on August 23.

Palin, on the other hand, did her third interview with a national television network last week. On Wednesday, she held her first media availability with her traveling reporters.

The Republican VP candidate has received less than stellar reviews in the few interviews that she has done.

Palin’s interview Wednesday with CBS’ Katie Couric drew criticism when the Alaska governor was unable to provide an example of when McCain had pushed for more regulation of Wall Street during his Senate career.

Palin was also criticized last week for appearing not to know what the Bush Doctrine was during an interview with Charlie Gibson.

Saturday night’s show — the third of the season for the NBC comedy program — brought back the season premiere tandem of Fey and Amy Poehler, who opened the season with a memorable sketch featuring Fey as Palin and Poehler as Hillary Clinton.

This time around, Poehler played CBS’s Katie Couric, parodying the interview with Palin earlier this week. Poehler, though, mostly played straight man to Fey, who ratcheted up her performance of Sen. John McCain’s running mate by satirizing her foreign affairs experience.

When Poehler’s Couric pushed Fey’s Palin to specifically discuss how she would help facilitate democracy abroad, Fey gave in: “Katie, I’d like to use one of my lifelines. … I want to phone a friend.”

When a confused Poehler informed her that that wasn’t how the interview worked, Fey’s Palin responded — alluding to one of the governor’s most quoted lines from the interview — “Well, in that case, I’m just gonna have to get back to ya.”

Fey, a former cast member and head writer of “SNL,” has seemingly been thrust back into regular appearances on the program despite her full-time gig with NBC’s “30 Rock.”

She is widely considered to look like Palin, and “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels persuaded her to ride the show’s hot hand. Her first appearance as the Alaskan governor two weeks ago was a huge hit, helping boost the premiere’s ratings and garnering attention online.

Fey wasn’t the only former cast member who returned Saturday night. Chris Parnell came back to play presidential debate moderator Jim Lehrer in a sketch that parodied Friday night’s contest between McCain and Democratic rival Barack Obama — which occurred less than 27 hours earlier than the live “SNL” broadcast…
